Old Camdenians II v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 21 May 2011 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
The 2's still await that elusive first win of the season, but a battling performance with the bat softened the blow at the league 9 fixture away at Old Camdenians.
Having lost the toss Town were put into bat on a Sunny day and on a very green deck. With some very disciplined bowling and some exceptional fielding, Old Camdenians quickly showed why they were sitting pretty at the top of the league with 3 wins from 3. They were certainly determined to make it 4 on the spin and quickly set about dispatching Towns top order for just 83 runs, with well over half of the allocated overs remaining. The innings then certainly turned with the introduction of Town Player-Chaiman, Ben Rawson-Jones and Twooo's skipper Neil Cheesewright.
Playing his first game in 2 years, the man with the double barreled surname, unloaded both his barrels onto the Old Camdenians attack, blasting a 4,6,4 in his first 3 balls! With Cheesewright holding up the other end, the skipper delighted in taking a back seat as Rawson-Jones set about bemusing the same bowlers that were earlier looking forward to an early tea. R-J quickly moved onto a remarkable 40 off nearly half as many balls whilst barely moving in the process!
His fine innings came to and end as he was caught in the deep whilst engineering another glorious stroke. It was now the turn of the skipper to take the initiative and steer the innings to that hallowed total of 200. Starved of runs in his first 3 matches, Cheesewright really needed a score. With his cricketing brain engaged the runs flowed in an innings that saw a defiant Dave Harding ably assist. When Cheesewright finally fell to a dubious LBW on 41, the score was just 9 short 200. Alas, it wasn't to be. The remaining 2 wickets fell for zip and Town finished on 191 all out with Dave Harding not out on 17.
It was now the turn of the Town bowlers to step up to the mark and bowl with the momentum still coursing from the first innings. This proved difficult as some line and length issues gifted the Old Camdenian openers with some easy scoring opportunities. With Neal Furmenger holding up one end, it was the ever reliable Sumeet Khetia to make the break-through with a sharp caught & bowled chance to dismiss the opener. The skipper needed another bowling gear and opted for the spin of Rawson-Jones to rev up the attack. It was the right choice. Bowling tight lines with perplexing spin, Raswon-Jones stemmed the flow of runs, picking up 2 wickets in the process. With another bowling change apparent, the Twooo's debutant Meeth Katira stepped up and put a spring back into the step of the Town fielders. Bagging 2 wickets in fine fashion with some disciplined bowling lines, Katira Jnr. showed why his call up was justified.
Unfortunately the combined Town bowling attack just fell short as Old Camdenians ambled to the winning total of 192-6.
Town must take heart in the knowledge that they were just a few lucky breaks away from dismissing the remaining Old Camdenians batsmen for a cheaper score. Some fine fielding performances by Ed Johnson, Andy Burt, Bobby Graham and Rukshan buoyed the Towns efforts whilst Pradip Pandey bowled well at the death.
The wait still goes on for that win, but 14 bonus points must show that Town 2's are nearly there?
