Hexton v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 22 Aug 2009 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 28 runs

Match report Northwood Town's second string kept their season alive with a dramatic victory against Hexton. The win closes the gap at the bottom to 28 points with twooooo games to play. Skipper Adam Hills won the toss and elected to bat. The wicket was decent enough but with big boundaries and long outfield, it seems clear that scoring runs would be difficult. Hills fell early caught down the legside but Jonno Armitage and Akshay Loomba batted with patience and let the score creep up. Loomba was brilliantly run out and Richard Robbins came to the crease and joined Armitage as the pair began to regularly put the ball to the boundary. The hosts took the pace off the ball and off spinner Lali caused havoc as Town's batsman seemed totally unsure how to play the bowling. Armitage (31), Robbins (22) and Alan Armitage (16) were soon dismissed and Town crashed from 80/2 to 119 all out.

Hills demanded a reaction from his side and made it clear that anything but victory would spell relegation for his side. Left armer Viraj Manek picked up two early wickets as Hexton struggled to get the ball away. Hills took heed of the success the hosts had with slow bowling and opted to bring himself and spinner Ben Rawson-Jones into the equation. It was a move that paid off as wickets began to tumble. Town fielded with quality and commitment and they sense victory was in the area. Debutant Suvin Mekwan took a superb catch to remove the dangerous Sam Marshall and Hills had Paul Marshall caught behind after he had threatened to be the one batsman who was capable of seeing the hosts home. Shaun O'Neill returned to take the final wicket as Town dismissed Hexton for 91 and gave them a chance of survival.

Hills was delighted with the attitude and response of his troops:
"I was absolutely dismayed at the manner we folded with the bat. But I cannot fault the commitment of the guys to fight back and we thoroughly deserved the win. We bowled well and more importantly, every single player was immaculate in the field. I'm delighted, but we need to back it up with victory next weekend."
