Match report A rusty 3rd XI started their 2016 league campaign in dismal style with an 83 run loss away to Harpenden 5th XI.

After new skipper Ben Rawson-Jones lost the toss, Town were put in the field and failed to use a helpful pitch. A plethora of full tosses and long hops betrayed the abilities and talents of the bowlers, although Mitesh Parmar was his usual disciplined self with the new ball and Nic Patel showed much promise.

The introduction of Rawson-Jones (3-9) and Salman Rizvi (3-34) into the attack caused the opposition to collapse from 136-3 to 176 all out in the 40 overs per side contest. However, Rawson-Jones – due to open the batting – sustained a hand injury in the field and was unable to take any further part in the game. He is still awaiting a pint from the person who won £50 in the sweepstake predicting how long he'd last this year.

Effectively one man down before a ball was bowled, Town began dreadfully and slumped to 19-4 against consistently accurate bowling. Only opener Taz Katira (15) showed any sustained application, lasting until the 24th over, after which the sorry innings was wrapped up for 93 all out.

A disappointed Rawson-Jones commented: “This performance is frustrating knowing the abilities of our players, but hopefully it’s a big wake up call that sparks a massive turnaround next match. The amount of wickets lost to catches says it all - lack of match awareness that needs to be improved by more players committing to Saturday and Sunday cricket.”
