Match report Northwood Town 3rd XI pulled off a tense two-wicket victory with three balls to spare against Southgate Adelaide 3rd XI amidst the encroaching gloom at Chestnut Avenue.

Set 149 to win from 38 overs, Town's batsmen yet again struggled to convert promising starts into big innings. Openers Ben Rawson-Jones (31) and Jonathan Bentvelzen (22) began well, putting on 39. A flurry of wickets soon left Town in mild disarray at 54/3, but Bentvelzen knuckled down in an anchorman role that would make Ron Burgundy proud.

A procession of batsmen chipped in but quickly departed, with the required run rate soaring above six an over as Town slumped to 107/6 and then 131/8. Smart running between the wicket kept the side in touching distance of the win though. With 16 required off 12 balls with two wickets in hand, the game was fascinatingly poised.

Meeth Katira (14*) and Mitesh Parmar (7*) then stepped forward to forge the game's decisive partnership, with the former propelling the 3s to victory with a finely struck boundary with just three balls to spare.

Earlier, Town's bowlers and fielders performed impressively to limit the opposition to 148/8 from their 42 overs. Skipper Rawson-Jones snared 4-34 from 11 overs of spin, capitalising on impressive opening spells from Mitesh Parmar and Nic Patel.

The total would have been significantly more had it not been for fine efforts from Prakash Tailor behind the stumps (conceding no byes) and the legendary silver-haired fox Dave Harding in the field, showing the comparative youngsters how it's done.
