Match report Northwood Town 3s pulled off an impressive one-wicket victory against Berkhamsted 3s in a match full of twists.

Inserted into bat, Berkhamsted begun well and cantered along to 60-2 in the 12th over. The early introduction of spin at both ends proved as Mairaj Mobeen and skipper Ben Rawson-Jones bowled with discipline to put an immediate halt on the flow of runs. Wickets soon started to tumble, with Rawson-Jones picking up 4-27 in his eight overs.

Two wickets in two balls from Pradip Pandey finished off the opposition for just 130 in 32.2 overs.

Town’s response began poorly as the side crashed to 32-4 as opener Pandey struggled to find anyone to stay with him for long enough. The arrival of Rawson-Jones at the crease provided a sudden jolt of momentum, as he struck six 4s and a 6 in a quickfire 30 from just 16 balls.

After the skipper’s dismissal for a reckless swipe, Town fell to 78-6 and the game hung in the balance. Yet Pandey continued to bat with dogged determination to inch Town closer and closer to the target, mixing watchful defence with flowing drives to anything wide of off stump.

Pandey’s departure for an excellent 46 saw the game again twist in Berkhamsted’s favour, as Town – down to just 10 men – required 25 more runs with last wicket pair Abdul Firfire and Mairaj Mobeen at the crease. They batted calmly under pressure as the bowlers started to crack. With the run rate starting to climb, Firfire (13 not out) picked the perfect time to attack and his two 4s shifted the game in Town’s favour. The pair saw the side home with just six balls to spare.
