Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Berkhamsted IV on Sat 01 Jun 2019 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 28 runs

Match report A tough win but extremely satisfying as everyone fought hard to protect our 1st innings score.

On lovely warm sunny day Town took on Berko 4s at home. Town won the toss and elected to bat first. The opening pair of Lal & Jones got off to a solid start with Jones opening his account with boundary. Lal fell cheaply in the 7th over by which time the opening partnership stood at a healthy 42 runs. Jones continued to a resilient 52 and had to retired hurt due to a flare up of his knee injury. Palan and Khetia both contributed 14 each but the slowness and often accuracy of the Berko bowlers forced errors in both batsmen. Veteran Rajul Patel eased into his first game of the season and with young Fanner kept the scoreboard ticking over. Both fell to mistimed shots forced by languid bowling. The 6th wicket partnership of Abs and Suki added a massive and invaluable 46 runs to the score. Respect to to both players as they played patiently and watchfully putting away bad balls and grabbing cheeky singles at every opportunity. Town ended their innings at a respectable 194 for 7 in their 40 overs.

After a delightful tea Town were back on the field to defend a challenging but nevertheless gettable score. The new strike opening bowling pair of Palan and Mathur were extremely effective, both bowlers extracting bounce and seam movement on our ageing astro. Both strike bowlers returned decent figures and after 10 overs Berko were 41 for 2 falling just behind the required run rate. Spinning pair of Suki and JB were bought on shortly before drinks and both bowled effectively in tandem to keep the run rate below the required average of 4.8 runs per over. Berko batsmens fought admirably, their 3rd wicket partnership putting on over 60 runs to bring the score to 104 for 2 at 26 overs. Town skipper then introduced the old faithfuls of Khetia and Jones. Their wiley bowling confused and bamboozled the Berko batsmen picking up 5 scalps for a miserly 52 runs. Daly completed the bowling attack and destroyed the stumps of the last batsmen leaving Berko 28 runs short of their target. Town displayed energy and enthusiasm in the field with several match winning catches.

The game was played in excellent spirit, Berko made a point of this at the post match handshakes. You should all be proud of this wonderful performance, we showed character all the way to the end. Keep going and working hard for the win !!!!
